Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.
On this U.N. International Day of Peace I am sharing another prayer flag from 2009, which was my second addition to the third set. The idea: Before we can expect to see peace in the world, it first needs to be cultivated within each of us. I wove the words "happiness, compassion, kindness, equanimity" into the flag. My inspiration came from Patanjali's Yoga Sutras (1.33) which says: "The mind becomes clear and serene when the qualities of the heart are cultivated: friendliness towards the joyful, compassion towards the suffering, happiness towards the pure, and impartiality towards the impure." ( In later years, I found similar words in the Buddhist loving-kindness meditation.)
A bit of history if you are just joining us. This set of prayer flags began in 2009 under the theme "Reflections on Peace". It is the third set created for the Bhavana Project, which is an ongoing community art work intending to share wishes and aspirations with the wider world. New participants are always welcome!
