December News

What we plant in the soil of contemplation, we shall reap in the harvest of action.

The Bhavana Project flags are still gracing the Red Bluff Art Gallery.  I was recently asked by my friend (whose house we blessed with flags and wishes) to make a blank set of flags that will be used in a private fundraiser she is organizing to help defray medical costs for her friend.  Supporters will have the opportunity create a flag and the finished set will go to the recipient.  Both the giver and recipient were past participants in the Bhavana Project.  I love that the healing energy continues to move onward and upward!

Happy Holidays to you!

House Blessing

"To create is to share.  To share is to give back gift for gift, blessing for blessing."

I recently led a house blessing for a friend, including her and a group of friends.  We made a set of prayer flags.  It is heartwarming to see the creative process in action bringing connection with it.  Ritual is an important element to connecting.  Such simple human acts are healing as they bring us together.

Flags in Red Bluff

Bhavana Project Set#1 in Red Bluff Art Gallery
Bhavana Project Set#1 in Red Bluff Art Gallery

All three sets of the Bhavana Project flags are now on show at the Red Bluff Art Gallery located north of Sacramento in Northern California.  This is not the first time flags have appeared there.  Back in 2008, the second set was exhibited within the gallery walls.  Local artist Asya Lesly completed a flag for the project.   I am so pleased that all three sets could be shared with the Red Bluff community.

The Red Bluff Gallery is a busy cooperative, owned/operated by artists and managed by my  friends, Phil Dynan and Anastasia Nelson.  In addition to the gallery, they sell art supplies, hold events, workshops, and classes, as well as offering photography services.  Check them out at this link.

It Is Complete!

Peace is Within, Soar to the Stars by Linda Friedman
Peace is Within, Soar to the Stars by Linda Friedman

Very pleased to report that Linda Friedman, an artist from Vista CA, has finished her beautiful flag for the Bhavana Project's Peace set.  That completes this set, Readers!

Linda drew inspiration for the flag from a friend's photo of a public sculpture.  Linda reinterpreted the image  to cloth with paint, adding stitching and beading.  Linda mentions, "Because a couple of the beaded stars and the arms of the figures reach beyond the beaded frame, it seems to me as if a movement toward peace reached beyond boundaries of time and space."

The wording on the flag reads: Peace is within. Soar to the Stars.

Thank you very much for your contribution, Linda!  Your creativity has added a wonderful final touch to this series of flags.

The flags are heading to northern California for an exhibit later this year.  Stay tuned for details.

Flags Created!

All set up with Bhavana Project flags in back drop...

Sunday's flag workshop at Buster's Baskets was a fun afternoon of creative play.  First let me thank Tina Millman, proprietor of Buster's, for welcoming us and hosting this event.  Thank you to all the ladies who brought their energy and intention to the workshop.  I was happy to guide the explorations.

After loosening up with some creative exercises, it was on to flags...All were receptive and open, diving right into bringing their ideas to cloth.

Expressive Flags Abound

It's daring not to shut anyone out of our hearts, not to make anyone an enemy.  If we begin to live like this, we'll find that we actually can't define someone as completely right or completely wrong anymore.

Have you taken the time to notice the variety of personal and group projects out there that are based on a theme of prayer flags?  These flags cross cultural and spiritual boundaries in seemingly endless forms.  It pleases me to see them.  Such endeavors link us to the basic goodness found within each one of us.

Here are some recent discoveries:
Spark the Heart is a group flag project begun by Ruth Davis.  Several years ago Ruth invited participants to make flags for a Community Prayer Flag event in downtown Phoenix.  She will be doing something similar soon.  Go to Ruth's site for details.

Fiber artist Regina B. Dunn created a quilt called "Spread Peace" using flag images.  In addition to quilts, Regina also makes prayer flags as an expression of caring.

And of course, there is the ongoing online Prayer Flag Project with creations from people all over the world.  Visit the site to see more.

Please let me know about your favorite projects.  I would be pleased to share them and spread the word!

Art,Tea and Flags

I recently had an Artist Showcase and Tea event.  You can read more about that here.  At the Tea, I showed flags and talked about the idea behind the Bhavana Project.  Some of the ladies spoke about similar related projects, including friendship quilts, that became the means to their own healing process.  There are many avenues for sharing and connecting with others.  Creativity can play a pivotal role...so do not undervalue it!

Aprons as Prayer Flags

In 2012, a group of Albuquerque artists used the medium of the apron to express themes from women’s lives, struggles and history.  The Apron Project was an outdoor installation in downtown Albuquerque, NM during March 2012.  Another such exhibit is planned for March 2013 to be displayed at the National Hispanic Cultural Center.  If you would like to submit an apron, or contribute in any way, please go to their website WomynsWork or their Facebook page for more information.

Bhavana Project Set# 3- August 2009
Happy New Year to you!  The Bhavana Project's third set is still in progress with the last flag being worked on.  While we wait, let us revisit the beginnings....please enjoy the lyric, flowing flag made by Sigrid Wagner in August 2009.
